Meet a Musician
Stanislav Chernyshev, Co-Principal Clarinet
A new season starts in a few weeks, so we’d like to introduce a new musician. Stanislav Chernyshev will be joining us for the season as Co-Principal Clarinet, sharing the position with Ivan Petruzziello. Some of you may feel like he looks a little familiar and you would be right! He played with us on a few concerts last season, including for our recording of Prokofiev’s Cinderella. We hope you will have a chance to visit with him at some point…and perhaps we’ll convince him to submit one of his grandmother’s recipes in a future newsletter! Welcome, Stas!
Where are you from originally and where did you go to school? Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, I hold a bachelor’s degree in music from the Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia), and a master’s degree in music from St. Petersburg Conservatory (St. Petersburg, Russia).
How old were you when you started the clarinet, and what drew you to the instrument? I started the clarinet at the age of 12. One day, listening to a radio, I heard a recording of Benny Goodman. Fascinated by the sound, I asked my parents to find this instrument for me. I’ve been playing the clarinet since then.
What are your hobbies away from music? After attending a Kung-Fu class in NYC two years ago, it became one of my hobbies, and I hope to continue it in Fort Worth. Other than that, I enjoy cooking, making coffee and traveling.
What is your favorite food? My grandma’s Russian food, Taiwanese cuisine and, after visiting Fort Worth, definitely the Texas BBQ!
Do you have a favorite composer? There are so many wonderful composers, it would be hard for me to pick one! My top three favorites are the 3 Bs: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.
Other than beautiful playing, what attributes/talents are you looking forward to sharing with the FWSO Musicians and the Fort Worth community? Besides playing music, I’m also passionate about community engagement and teaching. I enjoy sharing my love for classical music with others in all kinds of formats. It could be an outreach concert or mentoring young musicians.
Anything else you’d like us to know about you? I am very excited about coming to Fort Worth and joining this big family!
